Poker sites are a comparitively new introduction to the game of poker when you consider it’s history, but the impact they have had upon the game is truly immense. To understand the impact of poker sites on the game we should first examine the poker scene back in the early days of the WSOP, where the main event was comprised of barely a dozen players. In these bygone days, what opportunity did the average man have of discovering the game and honing his skills at it?

The game of poker was unlike any other, in that you could not just sit down and learn as you did with a game like chess. Poker is a game that is driven by betting and money and so to truly learn it, you had to swim with the sharks.
Plenty of money could be lost just learning to be a competent player as there were next to no information outlets on advanced strategy available.
Fast forward a few decades and we have a wealth of books and informitive online sites, with coaching, and above all, poker sites.
The reason poker sites changed everything is because now a player can sit at home without feeling worried about walking into a cardroom and feeling completely out of your depth when you start to play. micro stakes, play money, cash games, sit n gos, they can all be found online.
online sites mean that players have the comfort and choice of how and when to play, and at what cost. This means players can learn the ropes of what is a great game, at little or no cost and slowly progress in whatever way they are comfortable with.
This would see popularity in any game soar, but when you add the catalyst of televised poker games and an unknown Chris Moneymaker winning the WSOP main event to the convenience of poker sites – You have the ultimate recipe for growth.
